How do we start planning our kitchen remodel?

KitchenPlanning your kitchen can be overwhelming, but it can also be very exciting!  To begin, you may want to write down the things that you love/hate about your existing kitchen.  This will help you start tracking the things you may want to see in your new kitchen.  Also, start paying attention to styles of kitchens when you are looking through magazines, swiping through social media, or visiting friends and family.  Knowing the overall direction of what you want the final look to be will help navigate the selection process.  The functionality, accessibility, and practicality of your kitchen can all be decided upon beforehand once you work with our designer to tailor your kitchen to the needs of your family.  A variety of tools such as Pinterest, Houzz, Facebook, and Instagram have a vast catalog from which to start organizing your thoughts and honing in on your style.  If you are finding that process difficult, our designer will walk you through steps to uncover exactly what will look best with your existing home and unique tastes.

How do we know which finishes are best?

We strive to educate every client before they select each item.  Our knowledgeable team and industry partners are subject matter experts in every part of the remodeling process.  We love questions!  If you have any concerns such as your countertop material durability, your tile maintenance requirements, or cabinet layout optimization – please ask!  We are happy to walk you through any concerns before you decide to move forward.  If you are confident with your choices, the construction project is less stressful and more enjoyable to watch everything fall into place.

How should we budget for our kitchen remodel?

KitchenBy evaluating your wants and needs, it’s easier to determine your priorities for the remodel. Your priorities will help all of us decide which options you should invest in as you budget your project. DF Hughes wants to keep your budget in mind starting at the beginning of the project so there are no surprises. Your remodeling budget is very important to you, therefore, it is equally as important to us. Keep in mind that sometimes it’s easy to become enamored with ideas that may ultimately be outside of your budget or what’s possible in your home. Therefore, it’s important to check your ideas against your priorities. We can help with that in the planning phase. Remodeling a kitchen is a major investment in your home. Our first priority is to help you understand the process and take as much of the anxiety out of a remodel as we can.  All our remodeling is constructed in Birmingham, Alabama and the surrounding areas, so we know what to expect for an average kitchen remodel.  We can help you assess your budget at our initial consultation and help set your expectations moving forward.

What are the steps in kitchen remodeling?

In an average kitchen remodel, you can expect to see the following steps:

  • Initial consultation: We will assess your needs, listen to your ideas/concerns, and take measurements.
  • Design meeting: Our interior designer will meet with you to go over a proposed layout and use your feedback to complete a design that is perfect for you.
  • Selections: Each element of the kitchen will be converted into appointments for you to choose finishes and styles.  Don’t worry!  Our designer will be with you every step of the way to guide your decisions for one cohesive and beautiful design!
  • Team Review: Each of our team members will accompany us to the space to assess potential challenges and discuss our design plan during our Team Review.
  • Proposal & Contract Signing: We will bring you our proposal and sign the construction agreement once everything is finalized.
  • Ordering: We will order all the materials to complete the project, and once we have them we will set a date for our Pre-Construction Meeting.
  • Pre-Construction Meeting: We will bring you a detailed and dated schedule for your remodeling project that lists what is happening every day of your project.
  • Demo: We will carefully remove any pieces of your kitchen that will not remain.
  • Construction: Framing, painting, electrical and plumbing modifications, cabinet placement, countertop installation, backsplash installation, and final appliance/fixture installs are some of the pieces you may witness during the construction phase.
  • Final Walkthrough: We aim to have a zero item punchlist by the final walkthrough phase, but we will ensure you are completely satisfied with the final product!  You are now ready to use your beautiful new kitchen!

Should we do a major kitchen overhaul or a minor kitchen update?

It is important to know what type of kitchen remodel fits your needs and budget. If the layout of your kitchen prevents you from fully utilizing the potential of your space, a major overhaul may be the best decision. Removing a wall to open up a space and adding an island might make your home live so much better! If the layout seems to fit your needs well, a minor kitchen update may be more appropriate. Replacing cabinet doors, drawer fronts, hardware, and a fresh coat of paint will inject so much life and longevity into a dated kitchen. During our initial consultation, we will discuss the pros and cons of each choice, and we can help guide you toward the right remodeling journey.
